22nd Monthly Mass in the Diocese of Kildare and Leighlin
There were 10 in the congregation this afternoon for the 22nd monthly Mass. The Priest was assisted by a single server. It was a Low Mass concluded with the Salve Regina sung in the Simple Tone.
"There must be an explanation for a congregation of ten."
The explanation is that they are 10good and faithful Catholics praying for the salvation of their eternal souls. Is the Mass any less valid because there were "only" 10 people at it? No. Did they experience less of a Mass because there were "only"10 of them? No. Calling any congreation attending the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass a "freak" is highly insulting but especially so on this occassion given that the Mass was specifically offered for a member of the dear faithful departed related to some in the congregation and we were further asked to pray for the repose of the soul of the sister of the altar server, whose anniversary occurs soon. Most insensitive commentary.
What are you on about "Very Annoyed"? Nobody called anybody "freaks". Rathlin Child said "Is THIS just a freak" obviously referring to the size of the attendance. If I call an incident a freak of nature, I would not be calling the dead or injured or anybody involved a freak. I would be calling the incident a freak - freakish - out of the ordinary. It's called a formal distinction but I guess you're just too busy judging the "good and faithful" from the rest to pay any attention to basic Scholastic philosophy. As it happens, the attendance is not a freak. Any sensible person would wish it was a freak. You seem happy to proclaim yourself "good and faithful" and ignore the rest. Have they added Luke 18,11 to the Prayers at the foot of the Altar since Summorum Pontificum? Bad, bad attitude. Less of the Pharasee and more of the Publican and there might be a few more attending.
Come on Very Annoyed. Chill will ya? I was talking about the attendance figures not the people. I think I got the explanation for the congregation of ten anyway.
I think Very Annoyed is totally overreacting to what Rathlin Child said. Perhaps if they looked more carefully at an attendance that can only be accounted as a failure and the reasons for that failure they would be better placed than flying off the handle.
I think it takes a great deal of moral courage to say what Very Annoyed (aka Not So Annoyed Anymore) said. Rathlin Child, I hope you'll respond on your next visit.
I don't think an attendance of 10 is anything to get too worried about, relatively speaking. It could be a lot worse.
In November, 2009, 8 turned out. In January, 2010, 5 turned out but, to be fair, it should be said that the organisers had cancelled the Mass - they just hadn't told half the regular congregation. There might be the beginning of an explanation there.
In April, 2010, there was an attendance of 9. There was also an attenance of 10 in June, 2010, and again in June and Octber, 2009.
So there you have it. Worry not. 10 is only joint fourth lowest!

Is this just a freak or is the attendance always this bad? There must be an explanation for a congregation of ten.
A bit sparse don't you think?
Whsat time is the monthly Mass? does it change? Is the location poor?
Does it make any difference to you if they aren't so good? If they only let the good and faithful into Mass there wouldn't be many there.
Folks!
Please calm down! I will generally post comments unless they are absolutely unpublishable so if you have something to say, say it nicely, please!
Rathlin Child: I think you can see that Very Annoyed took offense at what you said.
Very Annoyed: I thing you can see that Rathlin Child didn't mean to call anybody names or to criticise the 10 - just the 20 who weren't there.
Can we all move on?
God bless you!
I'm very surprised at this kind of discussion among Catholics. Very annoyed shouldn't be. She should be Very understanding instead.
I am willing to admit that I misread Rathlin Child's original comment. I apologise for my hot headedness.
Keep up the good work with this Blog.
I think it takes a great deal of moral courage to say what Very Annoyed (aka Not So Annoyed Anymore) said. Rathlin Child, I hope you'll respond on your next visit.
God bless you, one and all!
This is very sad. Christians shouldn't be fighthing with eachother when Christ is being forgotten by the world.
I agree with the last comment (Donnelly). What are you thinking of? Promoting the Mass or your selves?
NP VA its sorted. So whats the explanation for a congregation of 10? ;)
Give it up Rathlin Child!
So that's as clear as mud.
I don't think an attendance of 10 is anything to get too worried about, relatively speaking. It could be a lot worse.

This is a very poor turn out compared with the Mass in Abbeyleix. Maybe the venue should change to Abbeyleix.
*Sigh* Same old story. TG we have Diocese Priests saying the Latin Mass in Cork.
