Latin Mass in Carlow Cathedral

As already announced, Mass in the Gregorian Rite (Missal of Blessed John XXIII) will take place on Saturday, 1st May, 2010, the feast of Saint Joseph the Worker, at 11.30 a.m.

For those travelling from Kildare, public transport details are available from Irish Rail, Bus Éireann, and J.J. Kavanagh & Sons. For example, Irish Rail has scheduled a train leaving Dublin Heuston at 9:10 a.m., Newbridge at 9:37 a.m., Kildare at 9:45 a.m., Athy at 10:02 a.m. and arriving at Carlow at 10:15 a.m. Another is scheduled to leave Carlow at 2:10 p.m. stopping at all of those stations on the way back.

We hope that this Mass will satisfy five debts of gratitude, the first to the Ever Virgin Mother of God, whose Month is traditionally held in special honour by the Irish people, the second to St. Joseph, patron of the Universal Church, the third to St. Conleth, our own special patron, whose feastday in the traditional calendar of the Diocese of Kildare and Leighlin is on 3rd May, the fourth is to Our Most Holy Father the Pope, since we have been unable to obtain a Church in the Diocese of Kildare and Leighlin in which to organise Mass for the Anniversary of his election, and the fifth is to Priests during the Holy Year for Priests.

The Mass will be followed immediately by Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament, during which the Pope's Prayer for the Church in Ireland, contained in his letter to the Catholics of Ireland, will be recited.

Gregorian Chant Hymn to Saint Joseph

Our Lady, Saints Joseph and Conleth pray for us!

  1. The intercession of St. Joseph is very powerful. It can even open hearts hardened against the Pope.

  2. I will be there God willing. The Pope's prayer for Ireland needs to be recited in every Church and every home every day. Bishops and Priests need to lead by example and lead people in this prayer at every Mass.

  3. Shame on anyone who stops folks praying for the Holy Father. Some Irish sure have their priorities way off.

  5. Remember the words of St. Therese of Availa about St. Joseph "I wish I could persuade everyone to be devoted to this glorious saint, for I have great experience of the blessings which he can obtain from God. I have never known anyone to be truly devoted to him and render him particular services who did not notably advance in virtue, for he gives very real help to souls who commend themselves to him."

You are doing very well when you honor St. Joe!

  6. A very remarkable event given the Cathedral's recent history. I hope that it represents a watershed not only for the Cathedral community but also for the wider Church community. I will certainly be there.

  11. I feel very sorry to miss this Mass but we're going away for a week the day before. Maybe next time.

I wish you every success with the Mass and I hope that St. Joseph will be honoured with due reverence.

    God bless the work!

Those of us who remember the campaign to save the High Altar (and the now removed Altar Rails) are probably amazed that this Mass is going ahead. The hatred of the Old Mass displayed by the authorities during that campaign was hard to credit. Thank God and his Blessed Mother for seeing the Old Mass returned to Carlow Cathedral. The first of many, D.V.

  13. I hope that you'll be singing 'Queen of the May' on 1st May. It's a beautiful traditional hymn.

    God bless you all!

  15. A great step forward for the Latin Mass in the Diocese. I didn't think I would see the day when Carlow Cathedral of all places would see a Latin Mass once more. God bless all involved and grant their endeavours a crown of success.

  16. We all learned to answer the Latin Mass in St. Leo's. I'm looking forward to this Mass. It has to be the first time in more years than I care to admit to! Thanks to St. Conleth's Society. Thanks for rememberng St. Laserian too!

Thank you for letting us come to this Mass today. It was all beautiful and brought back so many memories. Why did they ever do away with it? Thank you to Father for his words about the lady from the Saint Joseph's Young Priests' Society and thank you for offering the Mass for Priests.
