The same themes and stock devices constantly crop up and it almost makes them interchangeable. I read somewhere that although the modern reader would like to have hard biographical detail, the medieval reader didn't see it that way. For him a saint was someone who showed forth miraculous powers as Christ Himself did, feeding multitudes from small supplies, healing the sick, making the blind see or even raising the dead. Thus he would be disappointed with the Life of any saint who didn't do these things. We only have a handful of early Irish female saints whose Lives have survived in any case. I'm not sure that I would agree though that the individual qualities of each doesn't come through, all are abbesses of convents but have their individual reputations - Brigid for charity, Samthann for spiritual direction, Íte for fostering children and Moninna for asceticism. I've recently been looking into the topic of saints and curses and whilst the Lives of male saints are often replete with incidents of the cursing of lands or individuals, this is rare in the Lives of the female saints. Otherwise though I reckon our women saints could give the men a run for their money on any day of the week!Brigithttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10500169174019662556noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3503689522096376739.post-28352285250501326192011-12-15T11:46:53.397+00:002011-12-15T11:46:53.397+00:00I read in the excellent journal of your associatio...I read in the excellent journal of your association the article by Prof. Bray that explores the concept of Mary of the Gael as a literary conceit (and perhaps more?) identifying Brigid more closely than historically could be justified with the Virgin. It is an interesting medieval mindset but a little disappointing for those expecting to find a feminist uniqueness to female saints that we often find in male saints. It would be an interesting subject, the uniqueness of male saints vs. the sameness of female saints.Veronica Lanehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12340070034885770230noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3503689522096376739.post-4423323656461999472011-12-14T16:22:03.840+00:002011-12-14T16:22:03.840+00:00The parallel of candlemas is what seems interestin...The parallel of candlemas is what seems interesting to me. It's a wonderful heritage that we can all share. Far better than the sham culture of the EU that is being imposed to empower the few. Ss.
